Justice Mbuyiseli Russel Madlanga
Former Acting Deputy Chief Justice, Constitutional Court
Justice Mbuyiseli Russel Madlanga is among Walter Sisulu’s most distinguished law alumni — a jurist whose career has shaped South African constitutional jurisprudence at the highest level.
He obtained a BJuris degree at the University of Transkei, now Walter Sisulu, in 1983, laying the foundation for a lifetime of service in the law. From that Eastern Cape beginning he built a career marked by rigorous legal reasoning, public service and judicial leadership.
His path took him to the apex of the South African judiciary. As a Justice of the Constitutional Court, and later as Acting Deputy Chief Justice, Madlanga contributed to landmark decisions that continue to guide the country’s constitutional democracy.
For Walter Sisulu alumni and current law students, his story stands as proof that a degree earned at this institution can open the door to national leadership in the legal profession — and that excellence grounded in public purpose remains the university’s lasting hallmark.
