Dr. Lunga Mantashe, President of the Walter Sisulu Convocation, has made history following his election as the inaugural President of the newly established Association of University Convocations. This national structure brings together convocation and alumni leadership across South African universities, with the aim of strengthening alumni participation in higher education governance, institutional transformation, and national development.
His election marks a significant milestone not only for Walter Sisulu but also for the broader higher education sector, as it establishes a unified platform for convocation leaders to influence policy dialogue, graduate development, and university-community engagement at a national level.
Dr. Mantashe continues to elevate the profile of Walter Sisulu through his leadership, commitment, and active representation of the university in national spaces. His recent appointment was formalized during a national gathering held on 06–07 March 2026 at Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, where convocation leaders from various institutions convened to establish the association and set its strategic direction.
Through this role, he is expected to champion alumni-driven initiatives that support graduate employability, mentorship, innovation, and stronger linkages between universities and society. Walter Sisulu extends its pride and congratulations to Dr. Mantashe for this historic achievement.
