Dr. Ncumisa Jilata is widely recognized as one of South Africa's pioneering female neurosurgeons and a trailblazer for women in medicine. Originating from the Eastern Cape, she pursued a career in medicine with determination and distinction, eventually specializing in neurosurgery.
Among her notable achievements, Dr Jilata became one of the first Black female neurosurgeons in South Africa, breaking barriers in a field traditionally dominated by men. She has successfully performed numerous complex neurosurgical procedures involving the brain and spinal cord, contributing significantly to patient care and neurological health services in the country.
Beyond her clinical work, she has played an important role in mentoring young medical students and aspiring surgeons, encouraging greater participation of women in surgical and STEM-related professions. Walter Sisulu health sciences alumni continue to serve in public hospitals, private practice, research institutions, and international healthcare systems, particularly addressing rural healthcare challenges in the Eastern Cape.
