Dr Zininzi Poppy Zangqa, a proud Walter Sisulu graduate, was admitted as a Fellow of Psychiatry at the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) Admission Ceremony — a milestone that marks the highest standards of specialist competence, ethical practice and dedication to patient care.
The ceremony, hosted in kuGompo City with Walter Sisulu’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences among the participating institutions, brought together medical professionals, academic leaders and families to honour candidates who completed specialist and subspecialist training.
For Dr Zangqa, admission as a Fellow represented more than a professional credential. She has described it as a meaningful opportunity to give back to her community and to advocate for mental health, particularly within the black community, while emphasising the urgent need to break the stigma surrounding mental illness.
Her achievement carries national significance given South Africa’s critical shortage of mental health specialists, especially in rural and underserved areas. Through her fellowship and advocacy, she embodies Walter Sisulu’s commitment to advancing medical education and healthcare delivery where the need is greatest.
