iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality and the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, marking a historic milestone towards the establishment of a satellite campus in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality. Envisioned as a flagship hub for agricultural education, innovation, and rural development, the campus will position agriculture at the centre of regional transformation while expanding access to higher education for communities that have long awaited this opportunity.
The partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities for local students, strengthen agricultural skills and innovation, stimulate rural economic development, and advance one of the university's signature themes, Food Futures. It reflects a shared commitment to empowering communities, nurturing future-ready graduates, and ensuring that higher education serves as a catalyst for sustainable social and economic development across Pondoland and the wider Alfred Nzo District.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Thandi Mgwebi, said the project has already achieved its critical foundational milestones through strong political and academic alignment. She emphasised that the initiative will not wait for physical infrastructure before delivering meaningful impact, noting that the work does not begin when the buildings are completed; the work begins now.
